More than a third of all video transmitted via 3G network in Russia, "hangs" when viewing

Company Skyfire, a 100% subsidiary of Opera Software, says that according to its own study in Russia in December 2013 , 37 % of the video transmitted through the Russian network 3G, « hangs " when viewing and requires re-buffering that leads to a negative user experience and a high percentage of rejection of further video viewing on mobile devices.

The study also found that when you play 28 % of all video transmitted over 3G in Russia , the " freezing" and buffering of more than 10 % of the total duration of the video playback .
According to a study Skyfire, Russian 2G networks were even less adapted for watching mobile videos : View more than 99 % of all videos viewed in networks 2G, accompanied by " hanging ", and 96% when playing video time "hanging " and buffering is more than 10 % of the total duration of the video playback .

These studies are based on Skyfire own statistics load networks with mobile video transmission , as well as on the results of the testing channel capacity networks Russian mobile operators, conducted in December 2013 by the research company OpenSignal.

Survey results also show that in the Russian 3G networks more than 16 % of the video transmitted bit rate of 300 kilobits per second or less, which is a very low rate for video playback on mobile devices. To view the mobile HD video requires 5-10 times wider channel bandwidth , and video playback in popular applications such as Instagram and Vine provided with a bitrate of 900-1300 kbps.

Skyfire data and OpenSignal coincide with the findings of On Device Research, conducted in Russia in December 2013 for Opera Software. According to these results , the question " Do you face difficulties in the form of delays and buffering when viewing mobile video ? " 13 % of Russian users answered "always " and 37% - "often ." Thus, half of those people are faced with a negative experience gained in the mobile video viewing .

The studies clearly show that the Russian mobile networks need further modernization in order to meet the growing demand for mobile video subscribers . Projected Cisco, from 2012 to 2017, mobile video traffic will grow in Russia 22 times, increasing annually by 85%. By 2017, 58 % of all mobile data traffic in Russia will be in the video, while at the end of 2012 , it accounted for only 43 %.

"Consumption of mobile video in Russia seriously increase during the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi , which will be a serious test for the mobile operators. We expect that the Russian mobile networks will continue to experience rapid growth of mobile video traffic , especially given the holding in the near future , and other major sporting events such as the Football World Cup in 2018. Today, mobile operators have the opportunity to combine the regional deployment of LTE networks with work on optimization of mobile video traffic by expanding network capacity 2G, 3G and 4G nationwide. Thanks to affordable today cloud-based solutions with support for network virtualization (Network Functions Virtualization), such as Rocket Optimizer from Opera, the Russian operators can quite quickly and effectively cope with emerging challenges in front of them in mobile data , "- said Nitin Bhandari senior vice president of products at Opera Software.

Solution to optimize mobile video Rocket Optimizer, developed technology-based Skyfire, you can define and , if necessary, to optimize the quality of services in real time for each video stream . Rocket Optimizer helps provide the necessary elasticity and flexibility of the network operator's infrastructure , which allows it to better cope with the growing volume of mobile video consumption .
