Concepts make flexible phones
seem like they’re right here, easy to use and comfy. In reality, everything that’s cool is happening in a lab and it’s still in the early stage of development.
Take the prototype below, from Asian firm AUO. It’s a bendable screen smartphone, that flexes to control certain apps and features.
Spotted by Engadget Chinese at Touch Taiwan 2015, this model was being showcased by a local manufacturer called AUO. The prototype integrates a 5 inch 720p AMOLED panel, that’s unbreakable and bendable. It seems to be much more flexible than the LG G Flex 2 for example, which is quite the compliment. You can see in the animation below how a gentle flexing of the screen controls the Google Earth app for example.
AUO claims that the device has “six degrees of freedom” for bending input. I can easily see such a technology used for gaming in the future. AUO also says that this tech can be expanded for phones with higher resolutions and even bigger devices. We can see it incorporated into tablets and used to twist a slate’s edge to turn a page.
