While Elon Musk tries to make us independent from the power grid, mainstream devices like smartphones and tablets are still powered by good old fashioned power. Well, that will no longer happen, if we take the Delta V handset seriously.
This is a hybrid energy phone, a model that relies on solar power, piezoelectricity and triboelectricity technologies. The creation of Niki Danai Chania, this device is supposed to be the very first “energy-independent smartphone concept”. It appears that the slightest vibration and movement can be converted into power for the handset’s features, so there’s no need for a charger.
Solar power is also useful and all the energy is gathered using films, that differ in texture. We’ve got the glossy photovoltaic ones and the rougher triboelectric ones, too. At the back of the device you can sense the different textures of the 3 types of film. If you tap the piezoelectric one and rub the triboelectric film, the needed power is produced and you don’t need to juice up the phone any more.
The question is: how long do you have to rub it?
