Sharp to invest $568M in OLED technology in 2018

Apple Watch invention enables True Tone display tech by measuring ambient light through a user's skin


Smartwatches perhaps more than any other portable device would benefit from power saving and color adjustable displays, but squeezing the requisite ambient light sensor that serves as the basis of such technology into an already stuffed chassis is a difficult proposition. Apple might have solved the problem, however, with a sensor capable of detecting light reflected through flesh.

Apple's iPhone 7 camera tops competition despite smaller sensor in DxOMark review

Imaging specialist DxO recently wrapped up its evaluation of Apple's iPhone 7, noting the new smartphone flagship raises an already high bar set by previous models thanks to Digital Cinema (DCI-P3) color gamut support, class-leading image stabilization, fast autofocus and other enhancements.

Sao Paolo joins list of cities with Apple Maps transit directions

Apple has quietly added a second Brazilian city, Sao Paulo, to the list of places with public transit coverage in the native Maps apps for iOS and macOS.
Travelers can now use Maps to navigate the city's bus and rail systems. As usual, different routes are color-coded, and the app will offer multiple routes where available.

Snapchat joins Apple on Bluetooth consortium, plots wearable augmented reality hardware

The latest member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group is growing social media platform Snapchat, amidst rumors that the company is working on a wearable augmented reality device that will expand its presence into hardware.

Buzz is building that Snapchat is working on a pair of "augmented reality goggles," according to theFinancial Times. The company's app already dabbles in mixed reality, using advanced facial mapping technology to modify a user's appearance for humorous selfies in real time.

Apple has served on the Bluetooth SIG Board of Directors since 2011, giving it a say in the future of the wireless technology.
